2008 Awards Jurors
Marsha Miro, Founding Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD)
Marsha received a BA from the University of Michigan in political science and art history and a MA from Wayne State University in art history. As an art critic and architectural historian, Marsha served as art critic for the Detroit Free Press for 21 years, from 1974-1995, as well as doing reviews and stories for many highly-regarded art publications. From 1995-2006, she was the architectural historian at Cranbrook Educational Community in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, during which time she wrote and produced an Emmy-award winning documentary about the architecture. She has almost finished a book about the Cranbrook architecture, which she will add to the books she has written about ceramic artist Robert Turner and fiber artist Gerhardt Knodel. Marsha has also held teaching positions at several area colleges. Currently in the role of Founding Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, her programs have been written about in publications around the world including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Washington Post.
Rebecca Hart, Associate Curator and Acting Head of Contemporary Art for the Detroit Institute of Arts
Rebecca Hart graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in art history from Williams College and a Bachelors of Fine Arts, Fiber from Kansas City Art Institute. She went on to obtain a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Cranbrook Academy of Arts, Fiber in 1995. In 2005, Rebecca graduated with a Master of Arts in Art History from Wayne State University. Rebecca is presently an associate curator and the acting Head of Contemporary Art for the Detroit Institute of Arts. Most recently she was project manager for the installation of Alexander Calder’s monumental sculpture Young Lady and Her Entourage, curator for the reinstallation of the DIA contemporary collection and co-curator for Julie Mehretu: City Sitings. Rebecca received the Mary Kirk Haggerty Award for Art Historical research from Wayne State University in 1998 and a merit award for “Paper/Fiber XIV, Iowa city in 1991, Contemporary Award, “Basket Weave,” Athens, OH. She has held numerous positions teaching fiber arts. Her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally and Rebecca is respected as artist, curator, critic and community volunteer.
