Come make a giant 6’ Paper Mâché turtle with the National Wildlife Federation. Work together as a group to create and construct a Spotted Turtle, one of Michigan’s threatened species. Learn about the Great Lakes ecosystem and how you can get involved to make a difference in Michigan’s fish and wildlife.


 

Letterpress an Art Fair Souvenir

Letter pressing adds depth and dimension to a design or text on paper. See this transformation as you hand press your own Art Fair souvenir with master engraver Jim Horton. Come experience this old world printing process.

 

Learn the Ancient Art of Making Japanese Uchiwa Fan
Detroit Institute of the Arts

Hand paint and design your own Uchiwa fan and keep cool at the Art Fair. The "uchiwa" (round fan) originally from China, were used in the 5th century in Buddhist ceremonies and rituals. They later became a common prop in Japanese performing arts and by the end of the 1700’s Uchiwa were widely used among ordinary people in the summer to cool off and keep mosquitoes away.    Popular motifs include people, flowers, birds and natural scenes.

 

Make Silk-screened Clothing

Learn how to hand pull a silk-screened t-shirt. New blank shirts will be available for purchase, or bring in and transform old clothes into new masterpieces. Each day will feature a new theme and set of screens to choose from, so be sure to hang with Modati more than once.

Test your knowledge of current events with Michigan Public Radio’s “Wait, Wait….” News Quiz. Compete head-to-head for prizes as you try to figure out what’s real news and what’s made up. Play “Whose Voice is that Anyway,” as you listen and identify the on-air voice you hear everyday.

Decorate your skin with a Henna Temporary Tattoo, an ancient body art from Africa, Egypt and India. 
Henna is best known for its dried, ground leaves that produce a colourfast dye in shades varying from pale brown to dark russet reds. Come experience this ancient form of expression passed down from generation to generation.

Pin Punch a Work of Art
Daycroft Montessori School

Children will have fun creating maps, animals or other fun objects while learning to develop their focus through “Pin Punching.”  After finishing projects, kids’ will be given a chance to win "A Week of Summer Camp at Daycroft Montessori School."

 

 

Create Sound with Colorful Wack-a-doodles

Kids’ l
earn about sound using wack-a-doodles, tuning forks and other fun instruments. Come and see how wack-a-doodles of different lengths make high and low sounds called pitch and volume. Use tuning forks to measure the energy found in sound waves - ripples in the air called vibrations.  This activity shows how amazing sound really is!
